Safer Schools Initiative

Youth Project - Safer School Initiative

This program aims to create safer spaces for LGBTQ2+ youth by providing leadership skills to GSA members and a chance for them to connect with other GSAs in their area.

The Youth Project will give support to GSAs creating events and activities in their schools then bring multiple GSAs together for mini conferences in their district to discuss what worked, what didn’t, and how to better plan an activity for next semester.

Registration

Interested schools will register below by October 13th. Registration is free and lunch is provided.

Any school needing help with their initial project will be contacted by Youth Project staff to coordinate for brainstorming and planning with the GSA!

Schedule and locations for mini-conferences will be released October 16th.

Program

Each GSA will be given just over one month to create and execute an activity or event for their school (these could be small or large-scale projects).

Starting November 1st Mini Conference days will be held in each school board district at hosting schools. During this we will come together and share our projects, what worked about them, and what we can build on as leaders in our school.

The mini conferences will be a chance for GSAs to meet other youth in their area, gain leadership skills, swap ideas, and discuss their school’s climate and how they can best make change.

At the end of the conference we aim for each GSA to have a plan for an event for the following semester and the confidence to take charge.
