The Board of Directors wishes to inform supporters of the Youth Project that Kate Shewan will be stepping down as Executive Director of the Youth Project, effective March 22, 2019.

As an employer, the Youth Project has consistently attracted passionate individuals from the 2SLGBTQ+ community, with Kate being no exception. As she moves on to a new and exciting professional opportunity, the Board of Directors would like to thank Kate for her tireless commitment to the organization and is looking forward to remaining connected with her as an active supporter.

“It has been a privilege to be part of this organization for the last four years and to work with great staff and amazing youth. While I am moving on to other opportunities, I will be excited to watch the Youth Project continue to expand and evolve in supporting 2SLGBTQ+ youth,” said Kate.

During her tenure as Executive Director, the Youth Project benefited greatly from Kate’s leadership. Some highlights include:

  • Establishing a Youth Project presence in Cape Breton, a historically underserved area for 2SLGBTQ+ youth.
  • Growing the scope and size of the organization’s education program and Gender-Sexuality Alliance (GSA) network.
  • Cultivating relationships at a national level, having recently served on the National Advisory Council on the LGBTQ2+ Apology.
  • Increasing the organization’s funding base to allow for growth and expansion of services and programming.

“What Kate has accomplished in an effort to better the Youth Project is certainly no small feat – it will be positively felt by many queer youth for years to come,” said Kym Sweeny, Chairperson of the Board of Directors. “It is now the responsibility of the Board to ensure that the momentum created through her dedication continues to grow, all in support of 2SLGBTQ+ youth in Nova Scotia.”

The Board is committed to a robust, open, and professional recruitment process in order to find the best possible candidate for this important position. In the coming days, information about the recruitment of the Youth Project’s next Executive Director will become available. Those interested in the position will find more information at youthproject.ns.ca/news.
