GSA/Two Spirited Alliance Conference
May 10th-11th

On behalf on the students of ABMHS, the community of Eskasoni and the Cape Breton Youth Project, we would love to inform you of an incredible event-taking place in our community for Indigenous youth in our province.

A little background on how we got where we are today, ABMHS established a GSA/Two Spirit Alliance six years ago. We started as humble group of less than ten students and it has since evolved into our current group of more than thirty students. Our mission is to create safe spaces for our diverse students in our school. As a result, we have students who openly identify as Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, TransGender, Non Binary, and Pansexual. Seeing them accepted by their fellow students, their families at home, and the community at large, shows the value of supporting our two spirited youth and their allies.

In Nova Scotia there are many GSA conferences that happen throughout the year. However, such conferences do not meet the needs of our Indigenous youth. A “safe space” for one group is not always inclusive for everyone. Our solution is to create an event by Indigenous youth, for Indigenous youth, celebrating both our heritage, and our LGBTQ+ identities.

A Two Spirited Celebration

We would like to extend a warm invitation to any indigenous youth (15-21) to attend our free, two-day conference, taking place the evening of Thursday, May 10th, and continuing all day Friday, May 11th, 2018 in Eskasoni.

We are pleased to offer free over night accommodations to any visiting students and chaperons. We will provide floor space in our gym; you provide your own mattress and bedding. All meals and snacks during the conference will be provided, including supper on Thursday evening. Attendees will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the event.

We are pleased to announce that will also host workshops designed to meet the needs of educators as well. We are hoping that this conference will have a springboard affect for other schools, helping them to establish their own, very much needed, GSA/Two Spirited Alliance.

Deadline for registration is Friday, May 4th, 2018.

We are really hoping to see a strong representation from each community.
YOUR SUPPORT COULD CHANGE LIVES.

Sincerely,

The coordinating committee,

Ron Martin
